A few years back, I put together a list of 10 short poetic forms, and I thought it might be fun to collect 11 longer poetic forms. Each of these is longer than a sonnet.

  3. Chant Royal. 60-line form from the 14th century.
  4. Glose (or glosa). 40-line Spanish form based off an epigraph.
  5. Paradelle. 24-line monstrosity created by Billy Collins.
  6. Rondeau. Just sneaks on the list at 15 lines.
  7. Rondeau Redoublé. French 25-liner invented by Clément Marot.
  8. Sestina. 39-liner with six repeating and rotating endwords.
  9. Trenta-Sei. 36-liner invented by John Ciardi.
  10. Triversen. 18-line tercet-based creation of William Carlos Williams.
  11. Villanelle. Five tercets and a quatrain (or 19 lines).
