2022 April PAD Challenge: Day 4

Hopefully, you’re on your fourth day of poeming today, but it’s possible this is your first day of writing poems this April. If that’s the case, here’s your chance to catch up!

For today’s prompt, write a catch up poem. This is not to be confused with a ketchup (or catsup) poem, but hey, write one of those if the poetic spirit moves you! But I’m thinking of catching up on work, catching up in a race, or catching up on some popular TV or streaming series.

Remember: These prompts are springboards to creativity. Use them to expand your possibilities, not limit them.

On April 9, 2022, our WDU Poetry Writing Virtual Conference will provide expert insights from FOUR award-winning and bestselling poets on the finer points of how to write poetry. Spend the day learning techniques for honing your craft from four different published poets, then (if you choose) you can have one of your poems (up to 40 lines) critiqued by one of our participating poets. The poet will provide you with a personalized critique of your poem.

Here’s my attempt at a Catch Up Poem:

“Ever After”

As soon as I catch up, I fall behind
at this glorified game of cat and mouse,
in which love is the thing I try to find.
As soon as I catch up, I fall behind–
learning romance is more than being kind
and just existing within the same house.
As soon as I catch up, I fall behind
at this glorified game of cat and mouse.

(Note on the form: I used the triolet form for this poem, but you can find more possible poetic forms here.)
