The editors say, “Malahat originally bore the subtitle ‘An International Magazine of Life and Letters,’ reflecting the founding editors’ background in European literature and connections in the international literary community. Under succeeding editors and in step with the growing of a truly national literature, the journal became more strongly Canadian, with a focus on Canadian and international poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction rather than belles lettres and critical work.”
This magazine pays $65 (Canadian) per published page, plus a one-year subscription to the magazine.
What They’re Looking For
The Malahat Review seeks poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. Fiction submissions can be up to 8,000 words, or up to three flash fiction pieces (750 words or less for each flash fiction piece). Creative nonfiction submissions can run up to 4,500 words. Writers can submit up to three to five poems (up to 10 pages) at a time.
The editors say, “Writers at all stages of their careers are welcome to submit their work to The Malahat Review. It publishes poetry, short fiction, and creative nonfiction by new and established writers mostly from Canada, reviews of Canadian books, and the best writing from abroad.”
