With artificial intelligence (AI) flying high for Web3 and the wider the world to see and embrace, it shouldn’t be a surprise that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has turned its attention to OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, in a new investigation, according to an initial report by The Washington Post.  The agency sent the San Francisco startup a 20-page letter demanding answers for how it is addressing ongoing complaints of misuse of consumer data and cases of “hallucination,” i.e., instances where ChatGPT has made up facts or narratives that have caused reputational harm. The FTC’s ask OpenAI will now […]

Anthropic, an AI firm founded by former OpenAI researchers, has revealed its updated chatbot Claude 2, which aims to take on rivals ChatGPT and Google Bard. The new model boasts impressive features such as a higher token limit, improved coding skills, and a public-facing beta website. The creators ambitiously describe Claude as a “friendly, enthusiastic colleague or personal assistant who can be instructed in natural language to help you with many tasks.” They may be right. Claude 2 can handle 100,000 tokens per prompt, meaning it can engage with content as long as a 75,000-word book, far surpassing Claude 1.0’s […]

An AI-Generated Nude Just Sold for $340,000. So, Why Are People Angry?

With all the developments in AI art in the last year taking up so much of the public awareness, it can be easy to forget that the movement has roots that reach back far before Stable Diffusion or Midjourney arrived on the scene. Robbie Barrat, for example, is a household name in the artificial intelligence and generative art universe and also represents an important part of crypto art history. Having experimented with machine learning and GANs (generative adversarial networks) since 2018, Barrat’s early explorations led him to produce a series of 300 AI-generated nude art portraits that have since become […]

How Forgotten Runes Is Using ChatGPT to Build a Fantasy Empire

What is the point of an NFT project? How do they sustain themselves, and what truly differentiates one from another? These kinds of Web3-related questions are unique in that they come from both crypto art veterans and those who still find the very concept of NFTs to be a bit absurd. They also sit at the crux of what is arguably the NFT ecosystem’s greatest challenge: justifying its own continued existence.  Not many projects have come up with a good, lasting answer to these questions, and it’s not always for lack of trying. Despite sincere efforts and the exceedingly common […]

The Generative AI Revolution: A Glimpse Into the Future of Work

The explosion of interest in artificial intelligence has drawn attention not only to the astonishing capacity of algorithms to mimic humans but to the reality that these algorithms could displace many humans in their jobs. The economic and societal consequences could be nothing short of dramatic. The route to this economic transformation is through the workplace. A widely circulated Goldman Sachs study anticipates that about two-thirds of current occupations over the next decade could be affected, and a quarter to a half of the work people do now could be taken over by an algorithm. Up to 300 million jobs […]

Group-IB, a Singapore-based global cybersecurity company, has identified an alarming trend in the illicit trade of compromised credentials for OpenAI’s ChatGPT on dark web marketplaces. The firm found over 100,000 malware-infected devices with saved ChatGPT credentials within the past year.  Reportedly, the Asia-Pacific region saw the highest concentration of stolen ChatGPT accounts, making up over 40 percent of the cases. According to Group-IB, the cybercrime was perpetrated by bad actors using Raccoon Infostealer, a particular type of malware that collects stored information from infected computers. ChatGPT and a need for cybersecurity Earlier in June 2023, OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, […]

Midjourney 5.2: A Guide to the Latest Tools and Features

On June 22, Midjourney announced the rollout of version 5.2 of its text-to-image AI model via Twitter. The latest update to the program since the company announced the release of V5.1 in May, V5.2 comes with some fun updates and toys that AI art lovers are already experimenting with in highly creative ways. The upgrade can produce some seriously impressive results, but like any tool, it works best when you have an idea of its capabilities and limits. If you’re unfamiliar with how to use Midjourney in general, head over to our guide on the image generation program first before […]

How ClownVamp Is Bringing Queer Visibility to Web3

Artists who use AI tools like Stable Diffusion and Midjourney often catch flack for producing work that is somehow cold, unfeeling, or lacking a distinctly “human” touch. The great irony buried just beneath the surface of this critique is twofold; first in that it glosses over the necessarily collaborative nature of such tools. But the second rebuttal to that kind of decontextualized condemnation contains an almost poetic paradox: after all, the machine learning processes that form the foundations of these programs are part of a field of study that is specifically geared toward replicating human intelligence. In other words, reproducing […]

The Alpha: Today, at the Worldwide Developers Conference 2023, Apple revealed its long-awaited mixed-reality headset, the Apple Vision Pro. Representing the first brand-new product category from the company since 2014’s launch of the Apple Watch, the high-end augmented and virtual reality headset could have a major impact on the future of the metaverse. The device’s main uses will include gaming, communication, video consumption, and productivity. According to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman, at least one person who worked on the device at Apple has called it “the future of the computer.” Blending augmented and virtual reality, the device is powered by an […]

Andre Oshea Thinks ‘We’re Not Giving Our Best Selves to Each Other’ in Web3

In an environment too often populated with big egos, cliques, and reactionary drama, Andre Oshea is a much-needed dose of humility and thoughtfulness in the Web3 world. The 3D artist, animator, and musician has made a name for himself in the ecosystem through NFT drop partnerships with the Academy Awards, Netflix, and the Grammys. But before carving out a lane in the crypto art sphere, Oshea made a living through client work with companies and figures like Snapchat, John Legend, Adult Swim, Vogue, Tidal, and more.  Oshea’s style contains clear echoes of his personality; his works are often vibrant but […]
