Society has never been very good at dealing with the emergence of new technologies. Even a cursory look at history reveals some of the usual suspects: the discovery and harnessing of electricity, the advent of the world wide web, and the birth of artificial intelligence, for a start.  In every case, people met these technological advancements with a mix of fear, optimism, caution, and even indifference. In the 1920s, the New York Edison Company had to advertise in the newspaper to convince the public of electricity’s utility. Shortly after the British scientist Tim Berners-Lee invented the world wide web (as […]

Traversing the world of non-fungibles is a daunting task. With so many new NFT projects, artists, and large-scale collections cropping up weekly, it has become nearly impossible to keep up with every subsequent development. In the past, a simple browse of OpenSea was enough to find the latest NFT craze. But things have changed drastically since the 2021 NFT boom. Now, NFT enthusiasts have to be acutely mindful of what and where they collect. To aid in the unearthing of awe-inspiring NFT endeavors, both new and old, nft now presents Undervalued: a weekly column highlighting innovative projects, collections, and artists pushing […]

NFTs and the Environment: Why the Anger Is Unjustified

Despite still being in their infancy, non-fungible tokens (NFTs) have already helped a variety of people accomplish amazing things. The blockchain-based technology has given artists a new way to create and sell their work, allowed researchers to raise money for scientific institutions, and even aided Ukrainians during the Russian invasion (in a number of ways, in fact). NFTs are also at the center of a rather serious controversy regarding climate change and the environment. Specifically, some allege that NFTs increase the already exorbitant carbon footprint of blockchains like Bitcoin and, as a result, significantly contribute to an already worrying climate […]

WATCH: These Artists Want You to Help Define Web3

What does a ‘decentralized’ internet even mean anyway? Within the realms of the NFT space — and Web3 as a whole — the interpretation of that ideal varies significantly. In the realm of blockchain gaming, titles like Decentraland are building towards it by providing scores of users with the tools to bring their dream game worlds to life. On the other hand, Ethereum creator Vitalik Buterin sees Soulbound Tokens as the fundamental building blocks for a future decentralized society. For others, building towards decentralization isn’t such a grand affair. It’s all a matter of execution — and perspective. For the […]

How Leading Musicians Are Elevating Utility With NFTs

As the speculative side of the NFT market cools, utility has cemented itself as a defining factor of successful NFT drops. And in the music industry specifically, where NFTs empower artists to unlock unprecedented opportunities for fan connection and collaboration, utility has never been more critical. As explained by green NFT platform OneOf’s co-founder Adam Fell, NFTs have upended the traditional role of a fan as a passive listener and consumer. Now, in place of a typical Web2 fan club comes a smaller but mightier Web3 street team composed of an artist’s most genuine fans who are mutually aligned and […]

Before the days of smartphones — if you can remember such a time — taking a great photo was a labor-intensive process. Now, it’s easy to master how to take good photos with your phone — no fancy cameras or desktop editing software required. Brands are catching on, too — these kinds of visuals remain important to marketing. But make no mistake: Taking a great photo on your smartphone is not as simple as pointing and shooting.
