The Alpha: Contemporary art institution Pace Gallery will present a physical exhibition featuring new work from generative artist Tyler Hobbs at its New York gallery from March 30 to April 22. This marks Pace’s first exhibition dedicated to a single artist’s Web3 project. Titled QQL: Analogs, the exhibition will feature 12 large-scale works from Hobbs’ experiments with a new algorithm called QQL, which he developed alongside fellow generative artist Dandelion Wist. The pieces — shared exclusively with nft now — were created using a subtractive process with a custom plotter and painted by hand. Speaking to nft now, Hobbs notes […]

Jack Butcher’s Checks Are Burning. What’s Next?

When Jack Butcher introduced his Checks project to the NFT space, he did so with a single sentence: “This artwork may or may not be notable.” Since his initial Tweet, it’s become clear that not only are Checks notable, but the collection marks a major shift in NFTs for the first time in nearly a year. Although still convoluted to some, Checks has emerged as the frontrunner of the newly incepted open edition (OE) craze, as well as a timely commentary on and criticism of Twitter verification under Elon Musk’s ownership of the platform. As the project continues to take […]

Let’s face it: The NFT space moves really fast. Considering how quickly things can change in the metaverse, a week in NFTs might as well be a month IRL. Don’t get us wrong — the more people onboarded into the space, the merrier. But because of the constant influx of great art and ideas, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to keep up with all the news, launches, and general happenings. Well, you can put the days of endless Twitter and Discord scrolling behind you as we pull together a weekly list of upcoming NFT drops you definitely don’t want to miss. […]

Bitcoin NFTs: The 20 Most Notable Ordinals Inscriptions

When software engineer Casey Rodarmor launched the Ordinals protocol on Bitcoin in January 2023, he sparked a movement on the blockchain. Now, NFTs can be minted on the Bitcoin mainnet. This news lit up the Web3 world as few other things have in its history, resulting in a fair amount of protest and excitement from the Bitcoin community. Purists (called Bitcoin Maxis) labeled the protocol an attack on the network, while others began gleefully minting Inscriptions — Bitcoin’s “native” version of NFTs — to their heart’s content. Much attention has been paid to the global amount and order of Ordinals […]

Jack Butcher’s Checks Derivatives Have Taken Over Web3

Without a doubt, Jack Butcher’s Checks VV is taking over Web3. What began as an artistic experiment and social commentary on the concepts underpinning Web2 and Web3 has grown well beyond the walls of its own making. At this point, Checks’ identity has shown up in derivative projects that span everything from early 2000s memes to Web3 tropes to classical art. The official Checks VV website features a page dedicated to these derivatives and currently displays 415 of them. Hell, we even gave our logo the Checks VV treatment. Given the breadth and depth of Checks’ reach, we may be […]

The Future of Digital Artistry Hinges On the NFT Royalty Debate

Comments are off for this post.
Despite the fact that approximately $100-200 million in NFTs are traded on blockchain networks each week, many creators still struggle to generate significant revenue from their work. The reason? Royalties — or rather, a lack thereof. Royalties allow creators to be compensated for their work beyond the primary sale, making them a vital source of income and a means of funding future creative endeavors. However, royalty allocations for creators are not technically enforceable. As a result, creators are at the mercy of the NFT platforms that host their work, as these platforms have the power to determine how royalties are […]

For Better or Worse, NFT Open Editions Are on the Rise

The rise of the open edition (OE) is officially here. After increasing in popularity throughout 2022, the last few months have seen thousands of artists and Web3 builders creating claim pages for open-edition mints. The NFT community has flocked to them in droves, generating millions in revenue and reinvigorating the crypto art space as it tries to shake off the icicles of a frosty 2022. Beyond the financial boost, OEs benefit the NFT ecosystem by driving engagement, allowing an artist’s fan base more opportunities to collect their work while expanding that community’s reach at the same time.  This all sounds […]
