Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta (formerly Facebook), released a string of significant announcements today regarding non-fungible tokens (NFTs). In a video posted earlier this morning (May 9, 2022), he said that Facebook is adding NFT integrations. Zuckerberg also stated that Instagram would begin testing its NFT features this week. “We’re starting to test digital collectibles on Instagram so creators and collectors can display their NFTs on their profile. Similar functionality is coming to Facebook soon,” the post read. Zuckerberg further elaborated in the video. “We’re starting building for NFTs not just in our metaverse and Reality Labs work, but […]

In January 2022, the NFT community was taken by storm with the launch of the Azuki collection: a series of avatars with a distinct look that’s equal parts The World Ends With You and Thrasher. Instagram is finally breaking into the weird wide world of NFTs. Meta originally announced plans to create an Instagram NFT marketplace back in March of 2022. Unsurprisingly, this led to months of speculation. Now, Mark Zuckerberg confirmed today (May 9) that the beloved social media platform will finally begin testing NFTs on Instagram this week. In a video posted to Zuckerberg’s Facebook and Instagram accounts, the social media patriarch is seen talking with entrepreneur and prominent NFT influencer Tom Bilyeu about “digital collectibles” coming to Instagram. “This week we’re starting to test digital collectibles on Instagram so creators and collectors […]

One of the earliest points of criticism levied at NFTs was the potential toll their continued production and distribution could have on the environment. Most of this was attributed to the increased strain the NFT ecosystem placed on the Ethereum blockchain. Thankfully, several groups have uncovered the key to making NFTs — and blockchain tech as a whole — more environmentally sustainable: shifting from a proof-of-work verification model to a proof-of-stake model. With the release of Algorand, an energy-efficient blockchain that’s offsetting its carbon footprint in partnership with ClimateTrade, and other environmentally-friendly blockchains such as Tezos, those concerns may slowly fade.
