NFT Game Developers Take on Minecraft After Blockchain Ban

Following Minecraft’s outright ban on in-game NFTs, some blockchain-based projects have been forced to find new homes. Case in point: NFT Worlds, a beleaguered metaverse gaming project that once enabled users to mint, buy, and trade various Minecraft-compatible 3D worlds. With Minecraft’s ban in place, NFT Worlds’ proprietary $WRLD token immediately tanked in value, exacerbating the effects of an industry-wide downturn. Source: CoinMarketCap NFT Worlds saw this potentially-catastrophic news as a rallying call. Like many others in this bear market, the company has no other choice but to keep building. In a lengthy public statement, the NFT Worlds team announced […]

An Upcoming Web3 Game Wants to Help You Relive Your Memories

Metaverse experiences don’t always have to be huge community-spanning affairs or ways for fans to engage more deeply with their beloved IPs. Outside of Web3, we’ve already seen the idea of using VR to craft deeply personal experiences for users. Let’s start with how this idea is approached in popular culture. In the opening minutes of 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, viewers were treated to yet another cutting-edge technological development from fictional futurist Tony Stark: BARF. In the film, the technology enabled its users to virtually relive their memories in vivid detail. Of course, included in that package is the […]

Web3 is starting to manifest itself in the real world. The Solana Foundation, a non-profit based in Switzerland that promotes the decentralization, expansion, and security of the Solana network, opened a permanent physical retail store on Thursday at Hudson Yards in Manhattan called Solana Spaces, according to a recent tweet. The store features crypto-themed merchandise and provides various stations dedicated to onboarding people to Web3, like a private booth where people can set up their Phantom wallet and jot down their seed phrase in secrecy. Solana Spaces NYC is now open: https://t.co/jZcZ99l5Cj We’re the world’s first retail & educational space […]

What first pops into your head when thinking about Miami? Is it Miami beach? Miami nightlife? Authentic Cubanos? Dwyane Wade? All are correct, but now Miami’s city government wants you to add “Web3 hotspot” to that list. During the NFT industry’s bull run throughout 2021, one of the most important events during this time frame was undoubtedly Art Basel Miami. Scores of NFT enthusiasts flocked to the event’s various locations across the city to catch one of many NFT-centric events taking place at one of the most significant networking events in the entire art industry — not just in the […]

A Senator Is Calling for Google and Apple CEOs to Stymie Crypto Scams

For all of Web3’s successes in celebrating diversity and raising funds for unquestionably noble causes, the Web3 space still has its fair share of bugbears — scammers. Thefts, rug pulls, and the like remain a distinct risk for anyone making their first steps into Web3. However, these bad actors don’t just look to target members of the crypto and NFT communities on their home turf via wash trades. Some have looked to gain access to users’ crypto wallets in a seemingly innocent way: via mobile apps. The lengths that scammers have gone to forcibly part users from their hard-earned crypto […]

Ready to Audition Your Bored Ape Brand? A Crypto Exchange Beckons

While still a new and relatively undeveloped concept in Web3, the NFT market continues to grow, with NFT rentals forming a new economy within the blockchain ecosystem. NFT rentals aim to address the question of reliable income with NFTs, in a bid to offer more than speculative price increases. Instead of letting your digital assets sit idle in your wallet, proponents argue, why not rent them (and their utility) out and earn passive income in the process? MouseBelt Labs, for example, recently developed a platform for NFT rentals called BoredJobs, which is essentially a licensing marketplace that lists thousands of Bored […]

A Company Says It Created Soulbound Tokens

A world with Soulbound Tokens (SBTs) may not be so far off after all. In a recent announcement from Web3 development platform Idexo, the company stated that it recently added SBTs into its Software Development Kit (SDK). Effectively, this would grant any and all developers using the platform the ability to create SBTs, as well as the option to host these reputation tokens on several different blockchains, with more options currently in the works. So far, developers will be able to create SBTs on Avalanche, BNBChain, Fantom, Polygon, and (of course) Ethereum. The best part? Idexo says it is prioritizing […]

A New Hello Kitty NFT Project Will Feature Eight Iconic Cities

Kawaii — a Japanese word roughly translating to “cuteness” — has seeded the world with Japan’s viral-friendly aesthetic. And, at least in the U.S., it dates back to when Pokémon first aired on TV sets worldwide, in the late 90s. However, going even further back to the 1970s, we also saw the birth of one of the most enduring cultural exports — and kawaii icons — of the East Asian island nation: Hello Kitty. On August 25, Japanese legacy brand Sanrio — best known for characters like Aggretsuko, and of course, Hello Kitty — are teaming up with RECUR to […]

How the Nyan Cat Creator Let Memers Finally Get Paid

Meme culture is one of the internet’s most cherished and valuable pastimes. And for a good reason — memes can be a deceptively rich form of social commentary that manifests itself in tightly-looped GIFs or evocative yet simple images featuring blocky text overlays. But they can also just be good, silly fun. For the longest time, memes were a great cultural metric of creator disenfranchisement on the internet. The disparity between the heights of global popularity that viral sensations have reached and the lack of compensation (or even basic recognition) their creators received is vast. It’s enough to cause a massive […]

Here’s How to Avoid Controversy With Posthumous NFT Launches

For years, releasing an artist’s work posthumously was a point of contention among fans, critics, and collectors. Both critical acclaim and enthusiastic embrace of loyal communities have met classic creatives like Hemingway and Van Gogh and modern-day musicians like Mac Miller and Pop Smoke. Not so for posthumous releases from Harper Lee and John Lennon — which were met with derision and criticism. Now, as new technologies and art forms emerge, many estates are exploring NFTs and the blockchain to pay tribute to the life and legacy of deceased legends.  According to OneOf CEO Lin Dai, posthumous NFT collections unlock […]
