NFT Tickets Are the Future of Live Music. Here’s Why

For the better part of a decade, concert and festival goers have foregone ink and paper in favor of storing their event tickets on their phones. As ticketing has transitioned from paper to PDF and the age of digital credentials, a new wave of post-pandemic performances has started to shake up the live-event ecosystem via — you guessed it — NFTs. Although it can sometimes seem like digital art and avatar NFTs are the only use cases for NFTs that have longevity, this just isn’t so. The truth is that NFTs can be used in far more ways than they […]

A Company Says It Created Soulbound Tokens

A world with Soulbound Tokens (SBTs) may not be so far off after all. In a recent announcement from Web3 development platform Idexo, the company stated that it recently added SBTs into its Software Development Kit (SDK). Effectively, this would grant any and all developers using the platform the ability to create SBTs, as well as the option to host these reputation tokens on several different blockchains, with more options currently in the works. So far, developers will be able to create SBTs on Avalanche, BNBChain, Fantom, Polygon, and (of course) Ethereum. The best part? Idexo says it is prioritizing […]

A New Hello Kitty NFT Project Will Feature Eight Iconic Cities

Kawaii — a Japanese word roughly translating to “cuteness” — has seeded the world with Japan’s viral-friendly aesthetic. And, at least in the U.S., it dates back to when Pokémon first aired on TV sets worldwide, in the late 90s. However, going even further back to the 1970s, we also saw the birth of one of the most enduring cultural exports — and kawaii icons — of the East Asian island nation: Hello Kitty. On August 25, Japanese legacy brand Sanrio — best known for characters like Aggretsuko, and of course, Hello Kitty — are teaming up with RECUR to […]

How the Nyan Cat Creator Let Memers Finally Get Paid

Meme culture is one of the internet’s most cherished and valuable pastimes. And for a good reason — memes can be a deceptively rich form of social commentary that manifests itself in tightly-looped GIFs or evocative yet simple images featuring blocky text overlays. But they can also just be good, silly fun. For the longest time, memes were a great cultural metric of creator disenfranchisement on the internet. The disparity between the heights of global popularity that viral sensations have reached and the lack of compensation (or even basic recognition) their creators received is vast. It’s enough to cause a massive […]

Here’s How to Avoid Controversy With Posthumous NFT Launches

For years, releasing an artist’s work posthumously was a point of contention among fans, critics, and collectors. Both critical acclaim and enthusiastic embrace of loyal communities have met classic creatives like Hemingway and Van Gogh and modern-day musicians like Mac Miller and Pop Smoke. Not so for posthumous releases from Harper Lee and John Lennon — which were met with derision and criticism. Now, as new technologies and art forms emerge, many estates are exploring NFTs and the blockchain to pay tribute to the life and legacy of deceased legends.  According to OneOf CEO Lin Dai, posthumous NFT collections unlock […]

Epic Games to Minecraft: Don’t Force Your NFT Views on Others

Minecraft’s recent ban on NFTs sparked a new wave of discussion in both the NFT and gaming communities earlier this week. Most notably, Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney weighed in on the matter in a recent reply to the Minecraft account’s tweet, urging platforms like Minecraft not to “interfere [with a consumer’s decision making] by forcing their views onto others.” Understandably, some NFT critics were quick to interpret Epic Games’ neutral stance on NFTs as a full-on endorsement of the technology. Sweeney corrected those users, instead encouraging them to “make their own decisions” on whether crypto, NFTs, and […]

HUSL NFT Project Will Help Users Start Their Own Businesses

While growing in variety, scope, and utility, NFTs and Web3 tools can become overshadowed by the flashy side of digital art technology. Purchasing and managing your website’s domain name on Ethereum Name Service might be helpful, but it’s just not as sexy as dropping or buying into a colorful PFP collection. Despite those optics, there are plenty of project developers actively exploring ideas on how to use NFTs in myriad ways. One up-and-coming business-related project is HUSL NFT. It’s a collection of 5,000 fully-automated software-as-a-service businesses wrapped and sold as NFTs. You’re probably not alone if you’ve raised an eyebrow […]

Are NFTs Securities? A Guide to Global Policies

Comments are off for this post.
Any digital asset, including non-fungible tokens (NFTs), can be classified by securities regulators as a “security.” But this begs the question of whether or not a prospective buyer is potentially subjecting themselves to a country’s securities law simply by buying and selling NFTs. The industry-wide expansion into the metaverse has opened the doors to associating and integrating digital assets into new virtual worlds, making it even more likely that these assets will eventually become commercialized and potentially subject to these securities laws. So, what do countries around the world have to say about NFT transactions and their characterization as a […]
